After noticing this on the shelves of many bookstores over the years, I'd had it mentally earmarked to read for some time. Just my Type by Simon Garfield is light hearted and easy to follow book about fonts. Even if you arrive here armed with nothing more than an appreciation for the written word and no typographic background, this book is bound to spark in you a new reverence for typography and have you looking at street signs and bill posters in a new light. It is important to take an interest in typography, as Designers, we communicate a clients ideas and aspirations through the use of words and images, either by creating those images through with photography, then carefully crafting them in software, or through generating icons and logos. Still we are often required to use text to accompany images or to be set independently in a way to communicate a message.
Fonts (or 'founts' for the puritans out there) are the form that have the power to express those words into meaning, and through the expressive hands of typographers we have seen much change through the ages. Where once only type foundries or a Printing Press could afford a fair selection of fonts, today they are virtually everywhere, and whats more... everyone's an expert.
